American artist Alex Katz is primarily known for his portraiture that synthesizes a kind of color field abstraction with realism; however, nature is a subject that the artist has depicted consistently since the early 1950s. Summer Flowers was created after the artist’s series of paintings that depict a range of flowers. The dynamic composition seen in the flowers’ slanted stems lends the impression of the flowers being blown in the wind, which complicates the sense of flatness that dominates Katz’s paintings and prints. Summer Flowers is the first editioned work on canvas that the artist has ever produced, making it a historically significant work.
