For more than thirty years Donald Sultan has experimented with various mediums to master the still life genre, vacillating between representation and abstraction. Sultan is fond of simple iconography, working with subjects such as lemons, eggs and playing cards. In these two screenprints, Sultan returns to his favored subject the poppy. The present works have dimensional flocking where the black is raised off the sheet, reminiscent of his early paintings made from tar.
