Collection Note:

Ed Ruscha’s 1970 screenprint Sin is a classic example of the artist’s early work exploring language that speaks to his career-long interest in the interaction between text and image. The work’s title word is featured in a slithery typeface that distorts the letters sideways in space, lending the illusion of three dimensions. In conjunction with the word “sin,” the lone cocktail olive brings to mind the popular three-martini lunches of the time period.

This print is based on Ruscha’s 1969 painting Sin with Olives which is in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Impressions of this print regularly perform well at auction, making it one of Ruscha’s more popular works.
