Collection note:

Part of a series of paintings created to explore our fascination, and hypnotic relationship with brand loyalty, Pan Am Monoprint belongs to a recent body of work by Cey Adams titled Trusted Brands. The images, characters and mascots in these pieces are used as a metaphor to analyze larger questions about the “Celebration” of American culture. A bygone era in history, closely related to our youth and innocence.

The subject of Cey Adam’s monoprint, Pan American World Airways, was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century. Pan Am enjoyed a near monopoly on international routes and astounding customer loyalty before filing for bankruptcy in 1991. Pan Am has a storied history in Cey’s studio, first created as a painting within his Trusted Brands collection and then reimagined as a suite of hand-collaged monoprints in different color variations at Gary Lichtenstein Editions.

“At first glance like pictures in a book or magazine, my paintings are very recognizable. Your eyes and brain tell you what you’re seeing is familiar. Feelings of comfort and nostalgia take over. Push in closer and hidden messages are revealed, raising questions about our values, consumerism, race, gender, class, and history.” – Cey Adams
