Additional Info: Derived from the need for larger wall coverings in his castle-inspired museums, the Aubusson tapestries are exquisite, hand woven representations of 13 images Dali and Pierre Argillet jointly selected from The Hippies prints. A collaboration in which Dali based prints on photographs taken by Argillet in India. Selected prints were created in editions of 6, where Dali and Argillet oversaw to deliver the colors and the details of the original etching in the woven works.
– Salvador Dali and Pierre Argillet decided to produce Dali’s work in tapestry because they wanted to produce art in a very large format to decorate the enormous walls of the castles they had individually built as their respective museums.
– The pair selected images such as Nude With Garter from Dali’s Hippies series, created in 1970-1971, to be handwoven into tapestries by Aubusson.
– The tapestries play an essential role in the creation of a “Dalinian” atmosphere, wishing to ensure precise replication of the color and detail of the original engravings, Dalí and Argillet both oversee the weaving process which is done entirely by hand. There are only 13 different images created in editions of 6 with few proofs that exist.
