Drawing inspiration from the calligraphic styles of Egyptian, Arabic, Hebrew, Native American, and Old English lettering, RETNA amalgamates diverse scripts and cultures to create a distinctive universal language that is at once accessible to everyone and no one. RETNA’s script has been adorning walls, paintings, and billboards since the street artist began tagging as a teenager in Los Angeles using his signature indecipherable swoop of sharp diagonals and hollow circles to spell out coded poetic phrases in his prints and paintings. The title of the present work is derived from the Latin name Ludovicus which translates to ‘victorious in sport’, deeming the work a contemporary symbol for power and strife.
