Additional Information:This bold composition is an emblem of JonOne’s rigorous “Wildstyle” attitude, which uniquely incorporates gestural techniques of the American post-war past. The impactful canvas features layers of the artist’s characteristically dripping paint in dominant blue as well as light-capturing white and black tone, a nighttime chromatic pattern that recalls his origins as a graffiti artist motivated by quick urgency while tagging in New York and Paris. Growing up in Harlem, John Perello, aka JonOne (American, b. 1963), was exposed to graffiti at an early age, seeing writing on the streets and subway cars throughout the city. He moved to Paris in 1987 and began working on canvas in a workshop called L’Hôpital Éphémère (Hospital Ephemeral) with other graffiti artists including Sharp, A-One, Ash, and Jayone Skki. While in Paris, JonOne translated his artistry from the streets to fine art, and has since become internationally celebrated. His work has been exhibited worldwide, in solo shows at galleries including Fabien Castanier in Los Angeles; Galerie Rabouan Moussion in Paris; Wunderkammern in Milan; Galerie Le Feuvre in Paris; and Kolly in Zürich.
