In 1984, Richard Corman was asked to photograph Jean-Michel Basquiat for L’UomoVogue. He recalls walking into the artist’s loft and being “engulfed by a wave of creative confusion.” Wishing to capture the artist without distraction or frivolity, Corman asked Basquiat to stand before a wall of grey seamless paper. All the young photographer knew, was that he was after what he described as ‘a simple portrait of a complicated genius.’ In just one hour, Corman captured 79 striking black-and-white shots, all of which told slightly different stories about Basquiat’s intensity, history and character.
For this limited edition silkscreen, Corman collaborated with master printer Gary Lichtenstein to create a colorful rendition of one of his iconic 1984 Basquiat photographs.
