Todd Sanders evokes the glory days of roadside America in his neon sculptures. Using a specialized weathering technique, Sanders creates modern work with a distinct vintage feel, resembling old relics rescued from forgotten attractions on abandoned highways. Sanders calls his style modern vintage, but considers himself a pop artist, sharing a rich artistic vein mined by Andy Warhol and other pop-culture iconographers.
In Gold Luchador, Sanders creates a masked wrestler in glowing red and gold neon on a deliberately rusted metal base. Sanders carefully paints and weathers the metal for his neons, scrubbing with Scotch-Brite pads and causing them to rust naturally via an accelerated-aging process he developed himself. This process results in a unique blending of Sanders’ whimsical neon designs and a vintage aesthetic that makes each piece “look like they would’ve looked if someone made them 70 years ago.”
